Scarless Endoscopic Facelifts
A scarless facelift is a facial rejuvenation procedure in which the scars have been minimized and are placed in hidden areas. Because these incisions are not readily visible, the term scarless is used.
This procedure involves an endoscope, a medical device that prevents the need for long incision and allows for faster healing with fewer side effects than traditional techniques. Dr. Ramirez is a pioneer of endoscopic techniques and he was the first in the world to perform a complete facelift (that included the forehead, mid-face and neck) with the endoscope.
Dr. Ramirez uses the endoscope for forehead, brow, mid-face, cheek, chin and neck lifts. Only rarely (in much older patients who require more radical facial rejuvenation) does Dr. Ramirez need to use traditional surgical methods.
You’ve undoubtedly heard of injectables and fillers to enhance your lips. These procedures achieve good results; however they need to be repeated after a period of time. Dr. Ramirez is able to provide lasting lip rejuvenation through surgery by elevating the position of the upper lip with respect to the teeth. This procedure gives you a broader, more appealing smile. Dr. Ramirez is also able to the amount of pink lip (vermillion) that is seen by injecting your abdominal fat. This will give you plumper lips and a fuller appearance. A special procedure designed by Dr. Ramirez also enhances the Cupids bow (the ends of your lips), beautifying the lips event further. The overall result is a more youthful appearance.
Surprisingly, many patients suffer from mouth asymmetry (when one side of the mouth does not match the other). Most often these irregularities are easy to correct with a minimum amount of small incisions. Most of these incisions are made from the inside of the mouth, so you will not see them.
As we get older, it is not only the face, but also the neck that show signs of aging. Turkey neck (when the skin around the chin and neck begins to loosen) is a typical example. Women are at greater risk for developing turkey neck than men; however anyone who is aging is at risk. Turkey neck results from the loss of elasticity in our skin. Through a variety of procedures, Dr. Ramirez can skillfully restore your neck to its former appearance.
Rejuvenating the eyes (called blepharoplasty) is a time-honored operation that usually involves removing skin, muscle and fat pads from the lower eyelids. Dr. Ramirez has modernized this old operation by using differentmuscle sparing techniques that he has developed. These techniques are adapted to your individual needs, resulting in aesthetically pleasing, youthful eyes.
Many people have ears that protrude, or else are curved, rolled or irregularly shaped and mismatched. Otoplasty is the operation that will correct these problems. Dr. Ramirez has extensive experience with a wide variety of ear irregularities. While most of his otoplasty patients are young, he finds that an increasing number of adults want to correct their ears as a part of their overall facelift. So if you have always wanted to change the appearance of your ears, you can do that now.
Sometimes, it’s easier to achieve the look you are after by adding some fat to plump up your face. Dr. Ramirez can collect fat from your own body, process it, and apply it to other parts of your body. Many patients like this procedure because you can get rid of fat from areas of the body that you don’t want and reuse it to fill in areas of the body that need it. Other patients like the idea of using their own fat – as opposed to using artificially created facial fillers and injectables – to enhance their face.
Are you a good candidate for these procedures?
All you need is a checkup to insure that you are physically healthy and a clear idea of how you want to look.
You and Dr. Ramirez will spend time during your consultation to make sure that your vision is realizable. Ideally you will have photos of yourself (or someone) that will serve as a model for your rejuvenation. Dr. Ramirez will draw from his years of experience and thousands of surgical procedures to help you create the look that you want. Your consultation, therefore, is one of the most important steps to a successful result. And don’t worry…if you’ve had surgery done elsewhere and are not satisfied, Dr. Ramirez specializes in correcting problems that previous procedures may have left.
Note that in addition to face-to-face consultations, Dr. Ramirez conducts consultations over the Internet. See theConsultations page for more information.
What can you expect?
Most facial surgeries are performed as an outpatient procedure, under general anesthesia, at our in-office surgery suite. You will be given pre-operative instructions well before your surgery date. You should not have anything to drink or to eat prior to your procedure.
You will arrive at our facility on the day of your procedure and enter our pre-op room. Feel free to bring friends or relatives, if you wish. Here you will relax, listen to music, have aromatherapy and be treated to a message. Dr. Ramirez does not rush you off to surgery; but rather prepares you gently for your procedure by enhancing your psychological and physical well-being.
Depending upon the procedure, the surgery takes from a few to several hours. During this time you will be under general anesthesia, so you will not feel anything. Note that Dr. Ramirez uses Board Certified Anesthesiologists for all of his surgical procedures.
Because Dr. Ramirez uses an endoscope for most of his facial surgeries, there is less swelling and bruising; and your recovery time will be shortened greatly. As soon as surgery is completed, you will be placed in our recovery room, until the effects of anesthesia wear off. You will not be able to drive home, so make sure that someone comes with you for your procedure or else transportation has been arranged beforehand.
There will be some swelling and bruising that can be relieved with pain medication and ice packs. Most patients will resume full activity within 7 to 10 days. When you leave the surgery center after your procedure, you will be given a follow-up appointment schedule and you should come back for your follow-up within a few days so your progress can be assessed. (Out of state or foreign patients should be prepared for a 7 – 10 day stay for surgical follow-up.)
Your convalescence will typically take between 10 to 14 days, perhaps slightly longer for complicated procedures. Not all patients recover at the same speed. Most patients can return to their normal activities within three to four weeks.
It may take up to 6 months before the final shape of your face will be evident, so be patient during this time. Please avoid any contact sports and other activities that may expose your face to injure.
Although all surgical procedures have risks and complications most aesthetic operations have a low rate of risk or complications. Dr. Ramirez will discuss with you, in detail, all of the possible risks associated with your particular procedure during your consultation; he will also be able to answer all of your questions.
